#2: Baking Animation with Dynamics aka. I smell cheesesticks

Today I attended the 2nd last VFX class held by Papeh aka. MisterDi :) Check out his website for these cool tips on VFX. available in indonesian n english.

VFX lesson #? recap:

1. Shortcut to aligning objects in Maya: Duplicate values

Method: Select the source object, followed by the target. Highlight the attributes in the channel box which u wanna have the same and then right click and select "Duplicate values".

Note: This method does not work on objects that do not share the same world. ie. objects that have been freeze transformed. or parent n child objects? - to be tested -

2. Shortcut to converting proxy models into the finalised one: ... eh.. Instance copying? -tbc-

3. Shortcut to animating a bouncing ball in Maya without setting a key: Baking animation in Dynamics.

Method: Set up a plane(floor) and a sphere (ball). Assign ball as the "active 'sumthing' collider" n the floor as a "passive collider". Select ball > (under Dynamics tab) > Fields > Gravity.

Rotate the plane to watch the ball bounce off.

Set total frames to 1000. Play n watch the magic unfold.

Now to bake your animation. Go to -tbc-. Now the settings to note: -be back with my notes-
Check Smart bake to have optimised keys set. (or not to key every frame)

4. Baking animation and rigid colliders theory can also be applied to Ncloth uses. such as, to state bluntly:
- Adding a blanket on your animated sleeping turtle.
- Curtain movement when the magician turtle walks through it.
- Playing on a piano. (animate only the hands n fingers. add colliders to the piano keys.)
- n more..

Obviously, animation with dynamics seems too good to be true, just like prince charming. While the potential is promising, of faster workflow n minimizing penetration (n hence sticky retakes), i shall reserve my opinions until i've tried n tested out myself :)

Supperr!
