#3: BaAnna Test WorkFlow #002

Here's a revise to the flimsy #001.
Note: This is just a log of how i do it. Not a foolproof guide. Mine's still in the process of trial n error. Note note: This is a workflow for character animation on a tv series schedule.

Step::

1. Blocking out the golden poses.
- (for Body mechanics) Golden poses to include for: the Neutral pose, the Anticipation (antics), the Action, the Overshoot (if u'd fancy exaggeration), and the Settle back pose.
- (for Acting) hmm.. Pose to pose. anything goes. Yawns. Sighs. Slumps. etc.
-oh wait. Did i mention that if the golden pose is incorrect, everything goes CRAZYYYY!. (not really:P)
So. if the animation isn't quite what u expect, even after countless effort tweaking the inbetweens, STOP ADJUSTING the breakdowns n check the golden pose again.
Hmmmm... *squints at screen* Aha!

2. Time out the G Poses. (roughly)
-Just drag the keys n playblast to feel the timing. (I like to do it in plateau)

3. HIPS FIRST (for humanoid characters)
- clear your mind. Check the reference. Act it out to feel the direction. Inbetween spotted!
- How to inbetween hips for a kicking action I did today. A little tip from the chief:
: Put a Down position for the inbw. Why? I dunno. Chief calls it the Disney arc!
- hips have little (2-3frames) or no cushioning/eases. (how come?)

4. OFFSET the HEAD
- Drag all the keys for the head right by 2 frames. (ie. delay head for 2 frames)
- Tip from the Chief: Where to key eases (in n out) n the inbw.
: Frame1; Pose 1. Frame 3; Delay pose. Frame 5; the InBW. Frame 7 now Frame 9; Pose 2.
: I believe the point is to try space out these important keys evenly (at least 2 fs).

5. INbetween the middle n upper spines.
- Trace the Hip keys. Move left by 1 frame and key in the delays for the MnU spines.
eg. frame 59, hip moves Down. frame 60, MnU spines bend forward.

6. Expressions (in chronological order)
- Blinks (mine's a separate ctrl from the eye ctrls)
- Block out the main expressions. (Eyebrows. Upper lower eyelids. Mouth.)
- Adjust timing. Key in eases. Expressions are fast. i do usually about 4fs between which major expression.
- InBWing. Eyes n mouth can help give the illusion of squash n stretch to a face tt can't. If there's dialogue, I use accents as 'stretch' points, points where the eyes widen n/or the lips narrow. It is also good to add a 'squash' point; brows flat, eyes almost closed, lips widened, before a 'stretch' to help emphasize the change.

That's about it for updates. Time to sleep. There are spiders running a muck.

#2: Baking Animation with Dynamics aka. I smell cheesesticks

Today I attended the 2nd last VFX class held by Papeh aka. MisterDi :) Check out his website for these cool tips on VFX. available in indonesian n english.

VFX lesson #? recap:

1. Shortcut to aligning objects in Maya: Duplicate values

Method: Select the source object, followed by the target. Highlight the attributes in the channel box which u wanna have the same and then right click and select "Duplicate values".

Note: This method does not work on objects that do not share the same world. ie. objects that have been freeze transformed. or parent n child objects? - to be tested -

2. Shortcut to converting proxy models into the finalised one: ... eh.. Instance copying? -tbc-

3. Shortcut to animating a bouncing ball in Maya without setting a key: Baking animation in Dynamics.

Method: Set up a plane(floor) and a sphere (ball). Assign ball as the "active 'sumthing' collider" n the floor as a "passive collider". Select ball > (under Dynamics tab) > Fields > Gravity.

Rotate the plane to watch the ball bounce off.

Set total frames to 1000. Play n watch the magic unfold.

Now to bake your animation. Go to -tbc-. Now the settings to note: -be back with my notes-
Check Smart bake to have optimised keys set. (or not to key every frame)

4. Baking animation and rigid colliders theory can also be applied to Ncloth uses. such as, to state bluntly:
- Adding a blanket on your animated sleeping turtle.
- Curtain movement when the magician turtle walks through it.
- Playing on a piano. (animate only the hands n fingers. add colliders to the piano keys.)
- n more..

Obviously, animation with dynamics seems too good to be true, just like prince charming. While the potential is promising, of faster workflow n minimizing penetration (n hence sticky retakes), i shall reserve my opinions until i've tried n tested out myself :)

#1: Clicking Too Much Mouse causes Sore Fingers

Either that or I was rubbing too hard while washing my clothes....

Give these a shot:

1. Rest
2. Massage
3. Avoiding use of affected finger

Result:
to be seen tmr

Something about animation

Today I started on a new sequence. No major body mechanics. Just acting and talking. Sounds quite simple right? Yes! This is perfect to practice getting my workflow right.

+++BaAnna Test Workflow #001+++

1. Put myself into the char's shoes and feel the acting. Note down ideas.
2. Golden Poses. (I block from plateau)
(I like to give my poses here lots of attention. It takes a chunk of time but it gives good foundation for later breakdowns.)
2. Time the golden poses.
3**. Work hip up. (Hip, middle spine, head) Accents. Arcs. Antics. Follow through. Delays. Holding pose.
(This part gets really confusing for me. Mainly involves a lot of multitasking. Jumping back and forth. Alot of guess work here.)
4. Shoulders, Arms, fingers and feet and toes. (Shoulders are REALLY useful in acting!)
5. Adjust timing of breakdowns.
6. Blinks.
7. Eyebrows. (Down on blink and b4 widenings. Offset the eyebrows)
8. Eyes. (Also needs a bit of attention here for shifty eyes... but not toooo shifty.)
9. Expressions. (Brows and mouth)
10. Make the curves nice in graph editor.
(its amazing what maya does to the tangents sometimes when you're not looking..so its good it check it)

Total time spent (1st char; 350frames): 4 hours

::Welcome to the BLog of BaAnna Peel ::

Hi all fellow readers! (friends and strangers alike)

Thank you for clicking on the ABOUT tab to hear me explain about this blog.

Let me introduce myself. I am the Reporter. And it is my job, to post entries to share everything and anything about BaAnna's wondrous journey into the world of Animation and the media industry, here on this blog.

BaAnna is an ordinary girl from an island (a small red dot on the world map), who dreams of becoming an animator and making really good animation. Her ultimate fantasy is to someday create a film of her own.

BaAnna studied Visual Effects and Animation at 3Dsense Singapore from April 2010 to April 2011. There, she learnt foundation drawing such as Portrait drawing, Perspective, Life Drawing, Character Design, Color Studies and Anatomy. She also learnt industry related knowledge such as Film Studies, Storyboarding and Storytelling. Most importantly, she learnt the Principles of Animation here and more when she took up Animation as a specialisation, where she learnt more about body mechanics and acting. BaAnna also enjoyed the other lessons she took: Modeling (basic and organic). Rigging. Basic Lighting & Compositing in Maya and Digital Painting.
>> Some of her schoolwork can be found by clicking on the respective tabs above.

When BaAnna comes across technical difficulties, be it Software or Animation, she posts them in the Self-Help section.

Check out BaAnna's latest adventures in Batam under: BaAnna IN Batam

And that's about almost all to say for now. I hope you'll find this blog to useful or at the very least entertaining, more work will be done to shape up this blog so STAY TUNED FOLKS! :D (quoted from Keith L.)

With Love,
the Reporter.
